Bacterial Ribosomal Protein (r-protein)

Target
r-protein
Molecular classification
Protein, Ribosomal protein
01

Overview

Bacterial ribosomal proteins are essential components of the bacterial ribosome, a large ribonucleoprotein complex responsible for translating messenger RNA (mRNA) into proteins. The bacterial ribosome is composed of two subunits: the small 30S subunit and the large 50S subunit. These proteins facilitate protein synthesis by assisting with the correct folding of ribosomal RNA, forming functional sites on the ribosome, and ensuring accurate translation. Many antibiotics target specific ribosomal proteins to inhibit bacterial protein synthesis. Some ribosomal proteins also have extraribosomal functions, such as gene regulation and mRNA stabilization.
