Overview

Bacterial ribosomal RNA (rRNA) is a fundamental component of the bacterial ribosome, which is essential for protein synthesis. It is composed of 16S, 23S, and 5S rRNA molecules, which provide structural support and catalytic activity for translation. rRNA is a major target for antibiotics, which bind to rRNA and disrupt ribosome function, inhibiting bacterial growth. The unique structure of bacterial rRNA compared to eukaryotic rRNA makes it a selective target for antibacterial agents. rRNA also plays a role in bacterial evolution and phylogeny, as the 16S rRNA sequence is commonly used for bacterial identification and classification.
