Bacterial ribosome (70S)

Molecular classification
Ribonucleoprotein complex
01

Overview

The 70S ribosome is a large ribonucleoprotein complex found in prokaryotes, including bacteria and archaea. It serves as the site for translation, decoding messenger RNA (mRNA) into polypeptides/proteins during protein synthesis. It is composed of a small 30S subunit (16S rRNA and ~21 proteins) responsible for decoding mRNA and a large 50S subunit (23S rRNA, 5S rRNA, and ~34 proteins) that catalyzes peptide bond formation. Many antibiotics exert their effects by binding specifically to either the small or large bacterial ribosomal subunit, thereby inhibiting translation.
