The bacterial ribosome 30S subunit is a ribonucleoprotein complex essential for protein synthesis in prokaryotic cells. It comprises a 16S ribosomal RNA molecule and 21 distinct ribosomal proteins (S1-S21). The 30S subunit plays a critical role in decoding mRNA, ensuring translational fidelity, and initiating protein synthesis. It is a major target for several clinically important antibiotics that disrupt bacterial protein synthesis by interfering with its function. Its structure contains key functional sites such as the decoding center, the P-site, and the D-site.
