The bacterial ribosome is a large ribonucleoprotein complex responsible for protein synthesis in prokaryotic cells. The 50S subunit, along with the 30S subunit, forms the functional 70S ribosome that translates mRNA into proteins. It is composed of 23S rRNA, 5S rRNA, and approximately 31–34 distinct proteins. The primary role of the 50S subunit is to catalyze peptide bond formation during translation. Many antibiotics target functional centers within or near key sites on this complex, making it an important drug target. Resistance mechanisms often involve mutations in antibiotic binding sites or modification enzymes that alter antibiotic affinity.
