A bacterial cell-surface antigen is any molecule present on the exterior of a bacterial cell that can be recognized by the host immune system and trigger an immune response. These antigens are typically proteins, polysaccharides, or other macromolecules embedded in or attached to the bacterial surface structures such as capsules, cell walls, membranes, pili (fimbriae), and flagella. They play a crucial role in immune recognition, pathogenesis, and bacterial evasion mechanisms. Examples include capsular polysaccharides, lipopolysaccharide (LPS), teichoic acids, and fimbrial adhesins. They are important targets for vaccine development and diagnostic assays.
