Bacterial surface antigens of Campylobacter jejuni include a diverse group of outer membrane proteins and glycoproteins, such as the major outer membrane protein (MOMP), PEB3, JlpA, and others, as well as surface-exposed lipooligosaccharides and polysaccharides[1][4]. These antigens are critical for the bacterium’s ability to attach to and invade host epithelial cells, facilitate colonization, and evade host immune defenses by undergoing structural variation in response to environmental pressures[1][4]. Immune responses to these antigens involve the production of antibodies, which can provide protection but may also, through molecular mimicry, contribute to the development of Guillain-Barré syndrome[2]. Surface antigens are under active investigation as vaccine targets, although high antigenic diversity and immune evasion limit efficacy to date[1][4].
