Overview

The gut microbiota is a complex ecosystem of trillions of microorganisms that significantly influence human physiology and pathology (NIH, 2023). Bacterial targets within this microbiota include specific enzymes, cell surface receptors, and metabolic pathways that can be modulated to treat disease (Nature Reviews Microbiology, 2021). For example, bacterial beta-glucuronidases are targeted to prevent the reactivation of drugs in the gut, thereby reducing gastrointestinal toxicity (PubMed, 2022). Other targets include the biosynthetic pathways for short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which are vital for maintaining intestinal barrier integrity and immune homeostasis (StatPearls, 2023). Dysregulation of these bacterial targets is linked to a wide range of conditions, including Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), obesity, and Clostridioides difficile infections (PubMed, 2021). Therapeutic interventions include the use of prebiotics, probiotics, fecal microbiota transplants (FMT), and emerging live biotherapeutic products (LBPs) like SER-109 (FDA, 2023). Small molecule inhibitors are also being developed to selectively target bacterial proteins without affecting the host or the broader microbial community. Understanding these targets allows for a precision medicine approach to modulating the microbiome for improved health outcomes.
