Overview

Bacterial toxins are potent virulence factors produced by microorganisms, categorized into endotoxins and exotoxins. Endotoxins, primarily lipopolysaccharides (LPS), are structural components of the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria that are released upon bacterial cell death or lysis, triggering intense inflammatory responses via the Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) pathway (StatPearls, 2023; PubChem, 2024). In contrast, exotoxins are highly specific proteins secreted by both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria that can cause damage to the host by destroying cells or disrupting normal cellular metabolism (Wikipedia, 2024). These toxins are responsible for the clinical manifestations of diseases such as sepsis, tetanus, botulism, and diphtheria (NIH, 2022). Therapeutic strategies focus on neutralizing these toxins using monoclonal antibodies, antitoxins, or specific binding agents like Polymyxin B to prevent systemic toxicity and organ failure (PubMed, 2021). While 'Endotoxins and exotoxins' is a broad category rather than a single molecular target, individual toxins within these groups are critical focal points for drug development and clinical management of severe infections.
