Bacterial Transcriptional Regulator VirS (VirS)

Target
VirS
Molecular classification
Transcription factor, AraC/XylS-type transcription factor
01

Overview

VirS is a bacterial transcriptional regulator of the AraC/XylS family found in Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It plays a critical role in the bacterium’s ability to sense and respond to environmental stresses, particularly acidic conditions encountered within host macrophages. VirS regulates genes involved in metabolic enzyme production, cell-wall envelope remodeling, efflux pumps, ion transporters, detoxification enzymes, and other transcriptional regulators expressed under low-pH stress. It is essential for the persistence of M. tuberculosis inside host cells and contributes significantly to its virulence. VirS has been proposed as an anti-mycobacterial drug target, and small molecule inhibitors that block its DNA-binding activity have been identified.
