Overview

Bacteroides is a genus of Gram-negative, obligate anaerobic, non-spore-forming bacilli that represent a significant portion of the human gastrointestinal microbiota. While they are primarily commensal organisms that assist the host by breaking down complex polysaccharides and contributing to metabolic homeostasis, they are also highly significant opportunistic pathogens. They are the most common anaerobic bacteria isolated from clinical infections, such as intra-abdominal abscesses, peritonitis, and bacteremia, typically following a breach in the mucosal barrier. Treatment usually requires broad-spectrum anaerobic coverage, though the genus is noted for having among the highest rates of antibiotic resistance among anaerobes. Because 'Bacteroides' refers to an entire genus of bacteria rather than a specific protein, enzyme, or receptor, it is considered too broad to be classified as a single molecular target.
