Baculoviral IAP Repeat Containing 5 (BIRC5)

Target
BIRC5
Molecular classification
Inhibitor of Apoptosis Protein (IAP)
01

Overview

Survivin, also known as Baculoviral IAP Repeat Containing 5 (BIRC5), is a protein that inhibits apoptosis and regulates cell division. It is highly expressed in most human tumors and fetal tissues, but rarely detectable in normal adult differentiated tissues, making it an attractive target for cancer therapy. Overexpression correlates with increased tumor proliferation, resistance to apoptosis, drug resistance, and poor prognosis. Several therapeutic strategies are under investigation, including antisense oligonucleotides, small molecule inhibitors, and immunotherapies.
