BAIAP2 divergent transcript (BAIAP2-DT) is a long non-coding RNA gene transcribed in the antisense direction relative to the BAIAP2 protein-coding gene. Like many divergent lncRNAs, BAIAP2-DT originates from a promoter region near a protein-coding gene and is part of a gene pair that is often co-regulated. Experimental evidence confirms that BAIAP2-DT (lnc-BAIAP2) is a bona fide lncRNA transcript. It functions primarily as a *cis* regulator of its neighboring gene BAIAP2, influencing the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-6 and IL-1α in the context of bacterial infection, particularly in macrophage responses to Group B Streptococcus. The broader biological significance of BAIAP2-DT and other similar divergent lncRNAs includes regulation of gene expression, intergenic signaling, and evolutionary conservation of regulatory elements. However, BAIAP2-DT is not a classical druggable target, and its function is currently understood to be regulatory, not enzymatic or receptor-like.
