Barrier membrane for tissue exclusion and bone graft protection

Overview

Barrier membranes are medical devices used to cover bone grafts in procedures such as guided bone regeneration (GBR) and socket/ridge preservation in dental and orthopedic surgery. Their key function is to act as a selective physical barrier: they prevent the ingrowth of rapidly migrating epithelial and connective tissue cells into the graft site, while maintaining a secluded space that permits the slower process of bone regeneration. Membranes may be resorbable (e.g., collagen) or non-resorbable (e.g., expanded polytetrafluoroethylene, PTFE, sometimes reinforced with titanium), selected based on defect size, need for stability, and clinical situation. They do not have pharmacological action or molecular interactions but are essential for encouraging successful new bone growth by providing a protected environment and structural support[1][2][3][5][7][9].
