Overview

Barrier-to-autointegration factor 2 (BANF2), also known as BAFL or BAF-L, is a member of the BAF protein family and shares sequence similarity with the canonical BAF protein (BANF1)[4][5]. BANF2 is highly expressed in the testis and pancreas and appears to have a specialized function distinct from BANF1, particularly in spermiogenesis, sperm maturation, and sperm function, making it a male germ cell marker[4]. While BANF2 can form heterodimers with BAF, unlike BAF it is incapable of DNA binding, and may regulate the DNA or protein binding functions of BAF in a tissue-specific manner[1][4]. There is currently no evidence it acts as a therapeutic target, nor are there any drugs or small molecules known to interact with it. Disease associations are unclear, with no strong evidence for direct roles in pathology, although its expression profile suggests a possible link to male germ cell development or disorders[4][5].
