Overview

Basic transcription factor 3 pseudogene 12 (BTF3P12), also known as HUMBTFC or lambda h23, is a processed pseudogene related to the parental BTF3 gene. Pseudogenes are genomic loci that resemble protein-coding genes but contain genetic mutations (such as premature stop codons, insertions, deletions, or frameshifts) that prevent functional protein production. While some pseudogenes can influence gene expression through non-coding RNA mechanisms, most—including BTF3P12—have not been functionally characterized and are not considered therapeutic targets. BTF3P12 does not produce a functional transcription factor protein, but the parental BTF3 gene is a general transcription factor required for the initiation of transcription and can be associated with cancer biology. BTF3P12 is a pseudogene not a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or functional transcription factor. BTF3 (the parent gene) encodes a functional transcription factor, but this entry is for the pseudogene, which lacks functional activity or therapeutic relevance. For canonical and structured biological target databases, this entry should be excluded from lists of actionable or therapeutically relevant targets. If you require information about the functional parent gene BTF3, distinct from its pseudogene, please specify.

Biological functions

Other (Pseudogenes generally do not encode functional proteins. Some pseudogenes can regulate their parental gene expression at the RNA level by acting as competing endogenous RNAs, microRNA sponges, or through other RNA-based mechanisms, though this is not documented specifically for BTF3P12)
