Overview

Basigin receptor (CD147, also known as EMMPRIN) is a widely expressed transmembrane glycoprotein of the immunoglobulin superfamily that acts as a receptor for several ligands, including cyclophilins, and supports the activity of monocarboxylate transporters. It is a key inducer of matrix metalloproteinase expression, promoting extracellular matrix remodeling, inflammation, and tumor progression. Basigin plays important physiological roles in vision, fertilization, and neural development, while pathological upregulation is implicated in cancer metastasis, cardiovascular diseases, infection by malaria parasites, and inflammatory conditions. The high degree of post-translational glycosylation critically regulates both its normal and disease-associated functions[1][2][3][4][5].
