01

Overview

Basolateral potassium (K⁺) channels are a group of ion channels located on the basolateral membrane of epithelial cells. These channels play a critical role in maintaining cellular ion homeostasis, facilitating potassium recycling, and supporting transepithelial transport processes. They are found in tissues such as the kidney and airway epithelium and are crucial for proper electrolyte balance and fluid regulation. Multiple gene families encode basolateral K⁺ channels, including KCNJ (Kir), KCNQ, KCNE, KCNK, and SLO (including SLO2.2). Disruption or mutation of genes encoding these channels can lead to significant physiological disturbances including impaired salt/water reabsorption, altered blood pressure regulation, and electrolyte imbalances.
