Overview

BASP1 antisense RNA 1 (BASP1-AS1) is a divergent long non-coding RNA transcribed from the opposite DNA strand of the BASP1 gene; their 5' ends overlap by 599 base pairs and BASP1-AS1 is 3316 base pairs long[1]. It localizes to the nucleus, especially in human fetal-derived neural progenitor cells, where it regulates expression of the adjacent BASP1 gene. BASP1-AS1 forms a molecular complex with BASP1 and the transcription factor TCF12, crucial for neuronal differentiation; knockdown of any element impairs neuron-specific gene expression and increases cell proliferation[1]. In neuroblastoma, BASP1-AS1 positively regulates stemness and pluripotency markers in cancer stem cells. Silencing BASP1-AS1 reduces stem cell marker expression, disrupts Wnt pathway activation, and abrogates neurosphere formation[3][4]. BASP1-AS1 is mainly researched as a regulator of differentiation and cellular identity, making it a potential intervention point for neuroblastoma cancer stem cells. No interacting drugs, clinical biomarkers, or safety concerns have been reported to date for this molecule.
