BAT-26 is a mononucleotide repeat (microsatellite) located within the fifth intron of the MSH2 gene, consisting of a polyadenine tract (Hoang et al., 1997, PMID: 9136020). It is widely utilized as a highly sensitive and specific biomarker for detecting microsatellite instability (MSI) in various malignancies, particularly colorectal cancer (Boland et al., 1998, PMID: 9843010). In cells with a deficient DNA mismatch repair (dMMR) system, the BAT-26 tract typically exhibits deletions, leading to a shortened sequence that serves as a hallmark of the MSI-high (MSI-H) phenotype. This marker is a key component of the Bethesda panel used to screen for Lynch syndrome and to identify patients who may benefit from immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy, such as pembrolizumab (Le et al., 2015, PMID: 26028255). However, BAT-26 is a genomic locus and diagnostic tool rather than a therapeutic target, receptor, or enzyme.
