BBOX1 antisense RNA 1 (BBOX1-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA gene located on chromosome 11 (p14.2–p14.1), transcribed antisense to BBOX1. It consists of 7 exons and produces several splice variants. BBOX1-AS1 is markedly upregulated in a wide spectrum of cancers originating from different systems and is associated with oncogenic functions, including promoting cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and metastasis while inhibiting apoptosis. Mechanistically, BBOX1-AS1 exerts its regulatory effects through ceRNA mechanisms (sponging multiple cancer-relevant miRNAs), stabilizing oncogenic mRNAs, and modulating critical cancer signaling pathways. Its expression correlates with tumor progression, metastasis, and poor prognosis, and it serves as a novel biomarker for diagnosis and prognosis in several human cancers.
Acts as a competitive endogenous RNA (ceRNA), sponging tumor-suppressive microRNAs (miRNAs) to regulate expression of target genes. Regulates mRNA stability of certain oncogenes or key signaling proteins. Modulates diverse cancer-related signaling pathways (e.g., Hedgehog, Wnt/β-catenin, MELK/FAK).
