The mitochondrial pathway of apoptosis is a key regulator of programmed cell death. It is primarily regulated by the Bcl-2 family of proteins. Pro-apoptotic signals trigger MOMP, releasing cytochrome c and other apoptogenic factors, leading to caspase activation and cellular dismantling. Lactaptin and its recombinant form RL2 induce apoptosis through this pathway by downregulating Bcl-2 and activating caspases. This pathway is independent of p53 status, making it attractive for targeting p53-deficient tumors.
