BCL2-like protein 11 (BIM)

Target
BIM
Molecular classification
BH3-only protein, BCL-2 family protein, Apoptosis regulator
01

Overview

Bcl-2-like protein 11 (BIM) is a pro-apoptotic member of the BCL-2 family. It plays a critical role in regulating apoptosis, particularly as an initiator of programmed cell death in various tissues. BIM acts as an apoptotic activator by interacting with anti-apoptotic proteins, promoting mitochondrial outer membrane permeabilization, and activating caspases leading to cell death. Altered expression or function of BIM has been implicated in cancer resistance mechanisms.

Mechanism of action

BIM acts as an apoptotic activator by interacting with anti-apoptotic proteins such as BCL2, BCL-X(L)/BCL2L1, and MCL1. Through these interactions, it promotes mitochondrial outer membrane permeabilization and subsequent activation of caspases leading to cell death
