Overview

BCL2 interacting protein 3 pseudogene 28 (BNIP3P28) is classified as a pseudogene, specifically a non-protein-coding segment of DNA that is homologous to the BNIP3 gene but typically carries inactivating mutations, preventing the production of a functional protein[2][4][11]. Pseudogenes may be transcribed into RNA and, in exceptional cases, their transcripts can have gene regulatory roles or be processed into non-coding RNAs, but no such functions have been demonstrated specifically for BNIP3P28[5][8][11]. The functional, protein-coding BNIP3 gene is known for roles in apoptosis and autophagy, but this does not apply to the pseudogene form BNIP3P28. As a result, BNIP3P28 is not a receptor, enzyme, or established therapeutic target.

Biological functions

No established protein-coding biological function.Possible RNA-level regulatory functions (common for some pseudogenes)

Disease associations

No specific disease role for BNIP3P28.Parental functional genes in the BNIP3 family are linked to apoptosis, autophagy, and cancer, but evidence does not extend to this pseudogene
