Overview

BCR pseudogene 3 (BCRP3) is a long noncoding RNA (lncRNA), not a protein-coding gene, derived from sequences homologous to the BCR (breakpoint cluster region) gene. BCRP3 is part of a family of BCR-related pseudogenes, but unlike BCR, it functions at the RNA level rather than encoding a protein. BCRP3 is cytoplasmic and acts as a positive regulator of autophagy: it binds to and activates the VPS34 kinase complex, thereby stimulating the process of aggrephagy, which selectively removes ubiquitinated protein aggregates. This function plays a role in protein quality control and cellular stress responses, supporting cell survival under proteotoxic conditions such as oxidative stress or proteasome inhibition. While BCRP3's mechanistic importance in autophagy is becoming clearer, it is not known to be a therapeutic target or a biomarker and does not currently have links to approved drugs or clinical indications[1][3][5].
