Behavioural modification

01

Overview

Behavioral modification refers to a set of evidence-based psychotherapeutic techniques rooted in B.F. Skinner's operant conditioning principles, aimed at systematically changing observable maladaptive behaviors in children and adults through reinforcement, punishment, extinction, and stimulus control. It emphasizes measurable outcomes by manipulating environmental antecedents and consequences, such as positive reinforcement to increase desirable actions (e.g., praise or token economies) or negative punishment to reduce undesired ones, without delving into underlying thoughts or feelings as in cognitive behavioral therapy. Commonly applied in clinical settings for conditions like autism spectrum disorder (ASD), ADHD, and externalizing disorders, it promotes adaptive skills such as communication, social interaction, and academic performance while decreasing problem behaviors like aggression or self-injury. Modern evolutions incorporate functional behavior assessment (FBA) to identify behavior functions, ensuring interventions are proactive, individualized, and focused on quality of life improvements. Though effective for sustained change, ethical considerations prioritize compassion, equity, and avoiding overly punitive methods.
