Bet v 1-specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) is a specialized antibody produced by the immune system in response to exposure to Bet v 1, the primary allergen found in birch pollen (Betula verrucosa) (PMID: 2585331). In sensitized individuals, these IgE molecules bind to high-affinity FcεRI receptors on the surface of mast cells and basophils (PMID: 18362951). Upon subsequent exposure to birch pollen, the Bet v 1 allergen cross-links the surface-bound IgE, triggering the release of inflammatory mediators like histamine, which leads to symptoms of allergic rhinitis, asthma, and pollen-food allergy syndrome (PMID: 27818663). As a therapeutic target, Bet v 1-specific IgE is addressed through various strategies, including the use of anti-IgE monoclonal antibodies like Omalizumab, which sequester free IgE, and allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT), which aims to shift the immune response toward protective IgG4 antibodies (PMID: 28780941). Monitoring levels of Bet v 1-specific IgE is crucial for component-resolved diagnostics (CRD) to distinguish true birch sensitization from cross-reactivity and to assess the efficacy of desensitization treatments (PMID: 22257158).
Monoclonal antibodies bind to the Fc region of free IgE to prevent its interaction with high-affinity FcεRI receptors on effector cells; allergen immunotherapy induces the production of allergen-specific IgG4 blocking antibodies and promotes T-cell tolerance.
