Bet v 1-specific immunoglobulins refer to antibodies, such as IgE and IgG, that specifically recognize the Bet v 1 allergen from birch pollen. Bet v 1-specific IgE is responsible for triggering immediate hypersensitivity (allergic) reactions by cross-linking FcεRI receptors on mast cells and basophils following allergen exposure, leading to the release of histamine and other mediators. Bet v 1-specific IgG, particularly IgG4, is induced during allergen immunotherapy and may function as a "blocking antibody," competing with IgE for Bet v 1, thereby reducing allergic responses and serving as a biomarker for immunotherapy efficacy. Elevated Bet v 1-specific IgE levels are a diagnostic marker of birch pollen allergy, whereas changes in Bet v 1-specific IgG may reflect treatment response. There are research efforts to develop Bet v 1-specific nanobodies and recombinant variants for both diagnostics and therapy.
