Beta-(1→3)-D-glucan synthase is a membrane-bound enzyme complex that catalyzes the synthesis of β(1→3)-D-glucan, a major structural polysaccharide in the fungal cell wall. This enzyme uses uridine diphosphate glucose (UDP-Glc) as the sugar donor to form β(1→3) glycosidic linkages. It is a validated pharmacological target for antifungal drugs. Inhibition leads to rapid loss of osmotic stability in pathogenic fungi.
