Beta-glucan synthase is a membrane-bound glycosyltransferase enzyme complex responsible for the synthesis of β-glucans, essential polysaccharide components of fungal and some plant cell walls. In fungi, the most studied form is 1,3-β-glucan synthase, which catalyzes the formation of linear 1,3-β-D-glucan chains from UDP-glucose. This enzyme is a critical target for antifungal drugs due to its central role in maintaining cell wall integrity.
