Beta-1,4-N-acetyl-galactosaminyltransferase 4 (B4GALNT4) is an enzyme encoded by the B4GALNT4 gene, classified as a glycosyltransferase that catalyzes the transfer of N-acetylgalactosamine (GalNAc) from UDP-GalNAc to N-acetylglucosamine-β-benzyl via a beta-1,4-linkage, resulting in the formation of N,N'-diacetyllactosediamine in N-linked and probably O-linked glycans. The enzyme is predicted to localize to the Golgi cisterna membrane, where it plays a critical role in protein glycosylation, influencing protein maturation and function. B4GALNT4 belongs to the chondroitin N-acetylgalactosaminyltransferase family and is related to B4GALNT3, sharing similar biochemical activities. While glycosyltransferases are implicated in various biological processes and diseases, direct links between B4GALNT4 and human pathologies are still being elucidated. There are currently no drugs or clinical biomarkers targeting B4GALNT4 specifically described in the accessible scientific literature and databases.
