The beta-2 adrenoreceptor (β₂-adrenoceptor), also known as the beta-2 adrenergic receptor or ADRB2, is a G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) that primarily binds epinephrine (adrenaline) and to a lesser extent norepinephrine. It plays a crucial role in mediating physiological responses such as smooth muscle relaxation and bronchodilation through the activation of adenylate cyclase and increased cyclic AMP (cAMP) levels via Gs proteins. Polymorphisms or mutations in this gene are associated with conditions like nocturnal asthma, obesity, and type 2 diabetes.
Activation leads to stimulation of adenylate cyclase via Gs proteins, increasing cAMP levels.
