Beta-amyloid peptide (Aβ42) is a 42-amino acid peptide derived from the amyloid precursor protein (APP) through sequential proteolytic cleavage by β- and γ-secretases. It is a major component of amyloid plaques in the brains of individuals with Alzheimer's disease and is considered a central factor in AD pathogenesis due to its propensity to aggregate into neurotoxic oligomers and fibrils. While it may have some physiological roles, its aggregation and plaque formation are key therapeutic targets.
