Beta amyloid peptide aggregates are assemblies of amyloid beta (Aβ) peptides, which are short sequences of 36–43 amino acids derived from the proteolytic cleavage of the amyloid precursor protein (APP). These aggregates are a hallmark feature in the brains of individuals with Alzheimer's disease and play a central role in its pathogenesis. Aggregated Aβ is neurotoxic and disrupts cellular function through several mechanisms, including inducing synaptic dysfunction, triggering inflammatory responses, promoting cell-to-cell transmission within brain tissue and impairing clearance mechanisms leading to further accumulation.
