Beta amyloid protein is a peptide derived from proteolytic processing of the membrane-bound APP. Its abnormal accumulation—especially as oligomers or fibrillar plaques—is central to Alzheimer's pathogenesis through direct neurotoxicity and indirect effects like inflammation. It remains one of the most intensively studied targets for both understanding dementia biology and developing new therapies aimed at modifying or slowing progression rather than merely treating symptoms.
