Overview

Beta-carotene-binding protein (BBP), also known as βCBP, is a specialized carotenoprotein that plays a critical role in the transport and stabilization of beta-carotene in various organisms. In insects, particularly the migratory locust (Locusta migratoria) and the desert locust (Schistocerca gregaria), BBP is a member of the juvenile hormone-binding protein (JHBP) family and is responsible for the density-dependent body color transition from green to black/yellow, a hallmark of the gregarious phase associated with swarming and crop destruction [8, 21]. In vertebrates, a 67 kDa cellular beta-carotene-binding protein (CCBP) has been identified in the liver (e.g., in ferrets), where it facilitates the uptake and intracellular transport of dietary beta-carotene for conversion into vitamin A [6, 29]. While not a conventional human therapeutic target, BBP is a significant target for sustainable pest control strategies aimed at preventing locust plagues [5]. In humans, the primary proteins involved in beta-carotene metabolism are the enzyme beta-carotene 15,15'-monooxygenase 1 (BCO1) and the transporter scavenger receptor class B member 1 (SR-BI), which are targets for addressing vitamin A deficiency and certain cancers [3, 14].
