Restoration of pancreatic beta cell function is a therapeutic target aimed at reversing or ameliorating diabetes by regenerating, protecting, or replacing the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. Strategies include stimulating endogenous regeneration, stem cell therapy, gene editing, and small molecule discovery. The ultimate goal is to achieve durable remission or cure for diabetic patients by reinstating physiological insulin production.
