Beta-crystallin A2 is a structural protein predominantly expressed in the vertebrate eye lens, where it helps maintain lens transparency and the refractive index[1][6]. It belongs to the beta crystallin family, specifically the beta acidic subgroup, and is characterized by its highly stable structure, as lens fiber cells lose their nuclei during development and retain crystallins throughout life[1][5][6]. The protein can self-associate to form homodimers and can also interact with other beta-crystallins to form heterodimers[1][6]. Mutations in CRYBA2 are associated with inherited cataracts, implicating its crucial role in lens function[1][2][4].
