It is expressed in various tissues, notably in the reproductive tract (epididymis, testis), lung, and bone marrow, and participates in the defense of these tissues against infection. In the male reproductive tract, DEFB106A is thought to support proper sperm maturation and reproductive homeostasis. Downregulation of DEFB106A has been observed in some forms of male infertility, implicating it in epididymal health and sperm function.
