Beta-defensin 106B (DEFB106B) is a small, cationic antimicrobial peptide that belongs to the beta-defensin family. It is encoded by the DEFB106B gene on chromosome 8p23, and exists as one of two nearly identical gene copies (the other being DEFB106A)[1][5]. Beta-defensins like DEFB106B are part of the innate immune system and are primarily produced by epithelial cells and neutrophils. These peptides exhibit broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, especially against bacteria (such as *Escherichia coli* and *Staphylococcus aureus*) and fungi (such as *Candida albicans*)[1][3][5]. DEFB106B also acts as a ligand for the chemokine receptor CCR2, suggesting a role in immune cell signaling beyond direct microbial killing[4][5]. Expression of DEFB106 genes is notable in immunologically active tissues (lung, bone marrow) and the male reproductive tract (epididymis, testis), where they contribute to sperm maturation and protection and are linked to fertility, with downregulation observed in some cases of nonobstructive azoospermia[3]. No small molecules or biologic drugs are currently known to specifically target DEFB106B for therapeutic purposes.
