Beta-defensin 116 (DEFB116) is a member of the beta-defensin family of small, cationic antimicrobial peptides involved in innate immunity. These peptides are classified into three groups (alpha, beta, theta) based on their structure, and they are primarily produced by epithelial cells and certain leukocytes. DEFB116 exhibits antibacterial activity, aiding the immune system by disrupting microbial membranes and helping to protect epithelial surfaces from bacterial colonization. There is currently no evidence that DEFB116 is a direct target of therapeutic drugs, nor is it commonly used as a biomarker. Its primary biological function is as an endogenous antimicrobial peptide involved in the defense against infection.
