Overview

Beta-defensin 119 (DEFB119) is a small, cationic antimicrobial peptide belonging to the beta-defensin family, prominent in vertebrate innate immunity. It is primarily produced by epithelial cells and certain immune cells. Beta-defensin 119, like other beta-defensins, functions through direct antimicrobial activity—disrupting bacterial, fungal, and viral membranes via pore formation and electrostatic disruption—and through modulation of immune cell chemotaxis and cytokine production, as well as maintenance of mucosal barriers. Beta-defensins also play regulatory roles in reproductive tract immunity and sperm maturation, with potential relevance in idiopathic male infertility. While defensins show therapeutic potential for infectious and inflammatory diseases, direct pharmacological targeting remains unproven and faces significant developmental challenges, mainly due to peptide instability, possible cytotoxicity, and complexity of immune interactions.
