Beta-defensin 125 is a human antimicrobial peptide, encoded by the DEFB125 gene on chromosome 20, with a length of typically 57–157 amino acids (depending on organism and splice variant)[3][5][6][1]. It is a member of the beta-defensin family of cysteine-rich cationic proteins, crucial to the innate immune system. These peptides disrupt microbial cell membranes, providing broad-spectrum defense against bacteria, fungi, and some viruses[4][7]. Beta-defensins, including DEFB125, are produced at mucosal surfaces and by epithelial cells in response to infection and inflammation, although the tissue and inducibility profile for DEFB125 itself is not robustly established. No specific clinical uses or drug interactions for DEFB125 have been reported; its primary function remains natural host defense[6][7][4].
