Overview

Beta-defensin 127 (DEFB127) is a cysteine-rich, cationic, secreted antimicrobial peptide that is part of the beta-defensin family[1][3][5]. Defensins are key effectors in the innate immune system, displaying broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity—disrupting microorganism membranes and providing protection against invading pathogens[1][2][4]. In addition to its antibacterial activity, beta-defensin 127 (and related family members) may function in immune cell recruitment, chemotaxis, and immune modulation[2][4]. Mammalian beta-defensins tend to have tissue- or organ-specific expression patterns; DEFB127 and related defensins are transcribed in the epididymis and may play specialized roles in sperm maturation and protecting sperm in the male reproductive tract[4]. Genetic variants or dysregulation of beta-defensins have been associated with infectious diseases, select carcinomas, and rare kidney syndromes, though mechanistic links to these diseases are still being elucidated[1][5]. No drugs currently target DEFB127 directly, and there is insufficient evidence for its use as a clinical biomarker.
