Antimicrobial peptide, Beta-defensin family, Secreted protein

Overview

Beta-defensin 129 (DEFB129) is a member of the beta-defensin family of cationic, cysteine-rich antimicrobial peptides primarily expressed in epithelial tissues and the male reproductive tract, especially the epididymis[5][3]. Like other beta-defensins, it is secreted and plays a role in the innate immune response, serving as a first line of defense against invading microorganisms[5][1]. Beta-defensins are stabilized by three conserved disulfide bonds formed between six cysteines, contributing to their structural stability and broad antimicrobial activity[2][4]. DEFB129 is also implicated in sperm maturation, motility, and fertilization, particularly in the epididymis, with evidence suggesting region-specific expression and possible contribution to idiopathic infertility[3]. Disease associations are primarily inferred from the general role of beta-defensins in infection and immunity, and direct links to human disease remain under investigation. There are no currently known drug interactions or established biomarker or safety concern data specific to DEFB129.
