Beta-defensin 131A is a small, cysteine-rich, cationic antimicrobial peptide that belongs to the beta-defensin family. These peptides are secreted, primarily by epithelial cells and white blood cells, in response to infection or inflammation. They function by directly killing bacteria and other pathogens through membrane disruption and by modulating immune responses through cytokine/chemokine induction and immune cell recruitment. Beta-defensins have additional roles in regulating inflammation, resolving immune responses, and protecting mucosal surfaces. The gene encoding beta-defensin 131A is located on chromosome 4p16 and is a member of a defensin gene cluster. The mature protein contains structural features conserved across defensins, including three intramolecular disulfide bonds that stabilize its structure and are essential for its antimicrobial and immunomodulatory activities. There are no approved drugs directly targeting this molecule, but research continues into its use as a biomarker and a potential template for development of new antimicrobial agents.
