Overview

Beta-glucan is a generic name for a diverse group of polysaccharides composed of β-linked D-glucose monomers found in the cell walls of fungi, yeast, bacteria, and cereals like oats and barley. Their structure varies by source, with backbones of β-(1,3), β-(1,4), and/or β-(1,6) glycosidic linkages, and their biological activity is influenced by molecular weight, branching, and solubility. Beta-glucans act as soluble fiber and immunomodulatory agents. They lower cholesterol by affecting intestinal absorption and stimulate immune responses through interaction with pattern-recognition receptors such as Dectin-1 on immune cells. This molecular family is associated with several beneficial effects in heart disease, metabolic regulation, infection resistance, and as adjuncts in cancer therapy. Beta-glucans are ingredients in dietary supplements and functional foods, not classic drug targets or receptors[1][5][6][7][2][3].
