Beta-glucuronidase is a lysosomal enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of beta-D-glucuronic acid residues from complex carbohydrates, such as glycosaminoglycans and glucuronide conjugates. This process is essential for breaking down these molecules so they can be further processed or excreted. It is involved in the degradation of glycosaminoglycans, detoxification by hydrolyzing phase II liver conjugates (glucuronides), and can impact hormone regulation. Deficiency leads to mucopolysaccharidosis type VII, while elevated activity can contribute to hormone imbalances and other health issues. Certain gut bacteria also produce beta-glucuronidase, which can impact host health.
