Beta-ketoacyl-acyl carrier protein (ACP) synthase is a key enzyme in the fatty acid biosynthesis pathway, catalyzing the condensation reactions that elongate fatty acid chains. There are several isoforms, including KAS I (FabB), KAS II (FabF), and KAS III (FabH). KAS III (FabH) is particularly important as it initiates the first elongation step in type II fatty acid synthesis found in bacteria and plant plastids. It is considered a drug target for developing antimicrobial agents.
