Beta klotho (KLB) is a type I transmembrane protein that functions as an essential coreceptor in the signaling pathways of certain endocrine fibroblast growth factors, specifically FGF19 and FGF21. It is primarily expressed in the liver, adipose tissue, and pancreas, and plays a key role in metabolic regulation. KLB is indispensable for mediating specific endocrine actions of select fibroblast growth factors by acting as their high-affinity coreceptor alongside canonical tyrosine kinase receptors.
